Exide Technologies’ Manchester, Iowa, Plant Honored with Inclusion Award

2019 Gazette Business Award Recognizes Exide for Hiring of Puerto Rico Workers

Milton, Georgia – (November 7, 2019) – Exide Technologies (www.exide.com), a global provider of stored electrical energy solutions, announced today that its Manchester, Iowa, plant has been honored with a 2019 Gazette Business Award. Exide won the “Inclusion” category, recognizing the Manchester plant’s hiring of workers from Puerto Rico earlier this year and efforts to help the new employees assimilate to the local culture. The employees made the move to Iowa to start their new positions with Exide at a time when Puerto Rico was experiencing high unemployment due to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

“Our hiring of these workers was a win-win for Exide -- we added highly qualified employees to our local workforce, and the employees from Puerto Rico found new opportunities in the growing battery manufacturing business,” said Exide Manchester Plant Manager Jason Taghikhani. “We are honored to receive this recognition from The Gazette and are proud to call the Manchester and Cedar Rapids communities home.”

The Exide Manchester plant, which celebrated its 45th year in operation this past summer, manufactures batteries for the transportation industry and employs 325 workers. In 2018, the plant needed to hire more employees in order to meet growing customer demands and was challenged by low unemployment in the Manchester area. The company decided to hold a job fair in Puerto Rico to attract skilled workers that were willing to make the move to Iowa.

“We commend the courage of our employees who left their homes, and in many cases, their families, to start a new career, and not to mention trading a tropical climate for our Iowa winter,” said Taghikhani. “We also want to recognize our team at the Manchester plant, the Manchester and Cedar Rapids communities and especially The Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce, who all went above and beyond to welcome and help our new employees assimilate to life in Iowa.”

With the success of the recruiting program, Exide plans to hold additional job fairs in Puerto Rico in the near future. For more information about open positions at the Company, visit exide.jobs.

The 2019 Gazette Business Awards are given annually by The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Award recipients are chosen by a panel of judges that include the Services Manager for the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant and Gazette staff members.
